Wyze has officially launched a new – pay what you want – subscription tier for its home security camera lineup called Cam Plus Lite. In a forum, the company explained that the Cam Plus Lite includes people detection, which alerts you when it detects a human being rather than just motion, as well as cloud recordings that are limited to 12 seconds in length, with a 5-minute cool-down period in between. Users can choose to pay as little as $0 per month for the new tier.

Wyze also says it’s removing the 32GB microSD card size limit on its cameras, and adding new rewind and skip buttons to make it easier to erase locally saved shots.

In terms of subscriptions, Wyze has begun experimenting with a pay-as-you-want people-detection model in 2020, hoping (correctly) that some users will be willing to pay to allow Wyze to offer the service for free to others. People discovery was originally added as a free service in 2019, but the company had to temporarily remove it the following year after the company that provides its AI technology finalized its licensing deal when it was acquired by Apple.

Smart home companies are currently divided over whether or not to charge people discovering. Google and Eufy currently offer similar features for free, while Arlo and Ring ship. Wyze’s big selling point has always been the affordability for security cameras, and the $0 payment option helps maintain that. For example, the Wyze Cam v3 is currently on sale for only $35.98.

Cam Plus Lite falls below the other subscription categories found on Wyze: Cam Plus and Cam Plus Pro. Cam Plus costs $1.99 per camera per month and removes a limit of 12 seconds and 5 minutes of lag on cloud recordings while also extending AI detection to recognize packages, pets and vehicles. Meanwhile, Cam Plus Pro costs $3.99 per camera per month and includes 24/7 professional monitoring, as well as the ability to recognize specific faces.

Cam Plus Lite will be available for Wyze Cam v2, v3, Wyze Cam Pan v1, v2, and Wyze Cam Outdoor. This is an expansion compared to the cameras that were able to access the previous subscription by paying what you want, which only included the Wyze Cam v2 and Wyze Cam Pan v1. The company says Cam Plus Lite support for Wyze video doorbells is coming soon. According to its FAQ, the people discovery system is not available outside the United States.
