RMIT Next is about the future of teaching and learning – a place for the RMIT community to brainstorm what the university should strive to achieve in the next five years and beyond.
Being about the future, RMIT requires a site that reflects innovation in both design and technology; And an agency can offer both at the highest level. They hired the Rock Agency for this task because of its strong reputation for favoring UX design principles, and an integrated approach to business – one in which development is not an afterthought of design, but an integral part of the site’s evolution, once again, to make the user experience the most important outcome.
RMIT Next is interactive, which means it constantly gathers input from the vast RMIT community through online forums and conversations – people post their thoughts and feedback. The real challenge in this scenario is how to organize and present the information so that it does not become chaotic and confusing as the site grows.
Knowing that the platform’s primary goal is for people to have their “opinion,” the Rock Agency designed an innovative way to display commentary to reflect importance and priority. The way people’s comments are presented is elegant and easy to understand and has become one of the hallmarks of the site.
The Rock agency also knew, from the start, that RMIT Next would need to support a massive amount of content, and therefore, defining the site’s architecture would be critical to its continued success. It should be easy to navigate and flexible enough to support continuous development without growing ‘clutter’.
Most importantly, it also needs to be simple enough that RMIT can manage it on its own and feel confident to do so without compromising integrity. UX design principles of best practices have been used to get it right – and the way the site has handled its growth over time is a testament to why this kind of solid work on the structure is so important and worth the time.
The integration of SSO (Single Sign-On) for RMIT and Linkedin users was another feature added by Rock Agency for ease of use, and it was all delivered within a tight schedule that the client greatly appreciated.
Award winning work
In 2021, the Rock Agency entered the Australian Web Awards for the first time, in six categories. The Rock Agency is shortlisted for four of these categories – meaning it’s been included in the top five entries across Australia.
And in the Best Education Website category, the Rock Agency won the RMIT Next Award. (They also won Best Ecommerce Site for Vandenberg Wines.)
In addition, the Rock Agency also received the RMIT Next Special Discipline Award for Best Overall Content. It speaks to their passion for creating award winning websites that keep the user focused.
