Disney chooses its first female chair of its board of directors

Susan Arnold has been elected chair of the Walt Disney Company’s board of directors for the first time in the company’s 98-year history.

She will succeed Bob Iger when he leaves the company at the end of this year.

Arnold has been a member of the Board of Directors for fourteen years and has served as the independent principal director since 2018.

Arnold has held previous positions that include Operational Executive at The Carlyle Group, Director of the Board of Directors of McDonald’s Corporation, and Head of Global Business Units at Procter & Gamble.

The National Commission for Informatics and Liberties (CNIL) fined Google 150 million euros and Facebook fined 60 million euros because their websites facebook.com, google.fr and youtube.com did not allow users to easily refuse cookies because they accept them.

CNIL said Google and Facebook have three months to comply with its orders or face fines of 100,000 euros per day.

Spotify launches an interactive podcast ad format

Spotify has announced the addition of Call-to-Action Cards, a new format for podcast ads.

CTAs with customizable text, clickable buttons, and attractive graphics will appear once the ad starts playing in the podcast and will also remain visible on show and episode pages.

CTAs work by inserting a dynamic streaming ad and allow users to engage more with the brands participating in the podcast.

Brands Ulta Beauty (pictured above), Athletic Greens, and Squarespace have already experimented with this format with Spotify.

ITN CEO joins BBC as first chief news and current affairs executive

Deborah Tornes (pictured below) has been appointed Executive Director of BBC News and Current Affairs, replacing incumbent Fran Unsworth who will retire in March.

The BBC commented that it has changed position from director to CEO to build the BBC’s global news brand and further grow its news service which currently reaches 456 million people worldwide.

In her role, Turness will lead a team of nearly 6,000 people, broadcasting to nearly half a billion people worldwide in more than 40 languages.

Turness will also be nominated to join the BBC’s board of directors and her start date has not yet been confirmed.

Her previous roles include ITV News Editor and President of NBC News USA and then NBC international and she became CEO of ITN in April 2021.

Channel 5 reported the most successful Christmas period since 2005

Channel 5 recorded a viewership of 5.23% in the two-week Christmas period.

TikTok announces one-year sponsorship with the Confederation of African Football

TikTok announced its first major commercial partnership in Africa today with the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

With this sponsorship, the platform will support the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations taking place in Cameroon this month, the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League 2022 and the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2022.

TikTok plans to create a #WhereAllFansPlay virtual stadium that includes pre- and post-match content, highlights, football-related challenges, and an opportunity for fans to interact with football stars.

Publicis Groupe acquires Romanian software engineering firm Tremend

Publicis Groupe has struck a deal with Tremend, an independent software engineering firm in Central and Eastern Europe.

This acquisition will add to the global digital capabilities of business transformation company Publicis Sapient.

Tremend is reported to have 60 million end users, 650 software engineers, and clients such as Carrefour, ING and Orange.

Channel Box launches mobile apps for more global reach

Channelbox has made its content available globally with new Android and iOS apps.

The free OTT platform, featuring channels such as Euronews, France24, Nature Escape and Fashion TV, is also available on Freeview Channel 271.

Channelbox says it’s the only Freeview service that supports dynamic ad insertion and allows advertisers to monetize content via ad impressions rather than BARB ratings.

Pearl & Dean creates three senior positions in the sales team

Pearl & Dean has restructured its sales force with three promotions focusing on commercial and strategic disciplines rather than an agency-by-agency approach.

Christina Duffy (pictured below left) has been promoted to head of the trading agency, Jamie White (pictured below) to deputy director of sales, and Catherine Ferguson (pictured below right) to lead agency strategy.

White has been with the company since 2011 and will work alongside Claire Turner, Director of Sales, primarily responsible for revenue generation and business relationship management.

Ferguson and Duffy have worked at Pearl & Dean for over ten years as well and will report to White to focus on planning teams, strategy, cross-agency partnership and team relations across national and regional agency groups respectively.

John Ayling & Associates add two promotions to a large team

John Ayling & Associates, an independent media specialist, has promoted Alex Hurley and Cameron Cumming to its first team.

Hurley (pictured above right) is now the planning director and will focus on agency strategy while Cumming (pictured above left) will be the performance manager focused on agency performance and effectiveness.

Both have been with the company for more than ten years and were previously business managers with clients including Baylis & Harding, Cat’s Protection, Old Jamaica, Drinkaware, RSPCA and Woodland Trust.

Sky Bet launched a campaign with Roy Keane to promote the app

Skybet’s latest campaign will feature former Manchester United player Roy Keane across TV, Radio, Digital and OOH to showcase the ‘ease of use’ of the app.

The TV commercial contains 30 and 60 seconds of edits that run through January 31 and January 25 respectively that show Kane beating obstacles to enjoy a live match.

Most 60-second points will be weighted in the second week of January to coincide with the start of the Premier League again.

Integral Ad Science (IAS) has acquired Context, a Paris-based digital content classification company.

AI technology in context offers image and video classification across digital media such as social media platforms and Connected Television (CTV).

This technology will enable IAS marketing partners to find appropriate content that “beyond standard frameworks” by targeting a more precise context.

Nestlé selects a new head of media and digital communications for the UK and Ireland

Elaine Brown started as Head of Media and Digital Communications for Nestle UK & I.

Brown has been with Nestlé for over 10 years and previous roles include Digital Director, Associate Communications Director and Head of Digital Marketing.

Prior to that she had roles in iCrossing and Carat.

Acast upgrades MD from UK to MD in the Americas

Georgie Holt (pictured left) has been promoted from Acast Managing Director UK & IE to Managing Director of the Americas.

Holt has been with the podcasting company since April 2020, and the position of General Manager in the UK is now open for applications.

Holt previously held roles on The Stylist Group and Hearst UK.

Apple becomes the first company valued at three trillion dollars

The tech giant Apple has grown from $2 trillion to $3 trillion in sixteen months.

iPhone purchases make up about half of the company’s sales, with sales of other products like iPads and Macs increasing similarly during the pandemic.

Apple services and programs like the Apple Store, and storage space across iCloud, Apple Music, Apple TV+, and Apple Fitness+ subscription platforms have also grown.

The company debuted on the stock market in 1980 with a value of $1.8 billion.

Kraft Media announces new Managing Partner and Chief Strategy Officer

Kraft Media London has promoted Carolyn Manning to Managing Partner and Sam Fowler to the position of Director of Strategy.

Manning (pictured above right) has been at Craft Media since 2020 and was previously at Bloom UK for eight years.

Fowler (pictured above left) has worked with Craft Media since it started in 2019 and before that she had roles at MediaCom and Goodstuff Communications.

The Ozone Project hires strategic agency sales managers and customer service managers

The Ozone Project on the digital advertising platform has made three major changes in roles.

Natalie Dawson (pictured below) will take on the new role as Director of Strategic Agency Sales while Emma Cranston (pictured below right) will become Director of Customer Services.

They have both worked on the ozone project for nearly four years and one year, respectively, with Dawson previously working at Rhythm One and Yahoo while Cranston was at MG OMD.

Both will report to Craig Tuck, chief revenue officer, and will work alongside Jack Chadwick, the agency’s commercial merchandising director, and Sophie Raptis, client manager.

Angela Decube will also join the company this month as the agency’s lead sales partner and was previously the agency’s director in Hearst UK for four years.
