Is everyone eligible to be a founder? In your opinion, what specific traits increase the likelihood of a person being a successful founder and what type of person might seek a “normal job” as an employee? Can you explain what it means?

I don’t know if I am qualified to say who should or should not be an entrepreneur. Because honestly, I didn’t think I’d be hurt to be one myself. I will say though that entrepreneurship is kind of like parenting – it’s the hardest job, but the most rewarding one you’ll ever have. it’s hard. There will be days that you want to quit. But it’s not always about being the best – sometimes it’s just about beating your competition. To be a founder, you must strive relentlessly to “I’ll find out!” (from DEBORA)

Super ok. Here is the main question for our interview. What are the “5 things I wish someone had told me before I started” and why? (Please share a story or example of each.)

Running a business is complicated – the older you get, the more complicated things like accounting, taxes, law, etc. Hire someone to help you.
Accelerators are your friend – I had no idea what accelerators meant. We found out later after starting the company. Accelerators are a great way to get early capital and support for your business.
Don’t depend on anyone to write you a check – I spent a lot of time in the beginning attracting investors who would never write me a check. I wish I had spent that time building the business.
You will never be satisfied with your product – you will never feel that your product is good enough. It’s your child. This does not mean that it cannot add value to another person.
You will never feel like “you made it” – there will always be more that you want to achieve. This doesn’t mean that you can’t inspire others with how far you really are.
(from DEBORA)

How have you used your success to make the world a better place?

We’re still working on being a “success story”, but we’re definitely trying to give back along the way. We are big on talking to young minorities as well as partnering with people in our community to put Wichita, KS on the map! (from Angela)

If you could start a movement that brings the greatest wellness to the greatest number of people, what would that be?

I believe that wellness is about physical and mental health. My “movement” is to address both.

First, I would personally like to bring more positivity into the world. Focus on the good more than the bad. Focus more on strengths rather than weaknesses while recognizing areas that need to be developed.

Second, we’ve already started the SIGNA Sports United movement! And I’m proud every day to be a part of it! We enable more people to enjoy a more active lifestyle. For example, we recently created a “hello sports” app that rewards a customer for all their tracked activities with credits they can redeem for sports merchandise and equipment.

What are the “5 things I wish someone had told me before I started” and why?

Don’t be so hard on yourself
Find an environment where you can work on something for a purpose
Choose your boss and company wisely
Surround yourself with people who have complementary strengths. Make diverse teams and be very inclusive
Dare to be who you are and never stop learning

Sustainability, veganism, mental health, and environmental changes are big topics right now. Which of these reasons is dearest to you and why?

Personally, sustainability and mental health are my most cherished things. At SIGNA Sports United, we care a lot about both. First, I’m proud that our products enable a more active lifestyle and that we are part of the biggest change in mobility in the world allowing so many people to choose a bike over a car. Plus, as I mentioned, we’re proud of our carbon-neutral certification, and we’re working tirelessly to further improve our carbon footprint, and reduce our rate of return with better sizing advice (for example, using AI when configuring your bike or tennis shoe online) And making sure we get a fair and attractive workplace.
