Formative Content announced its move to an Employee Owned Trust (EOT). The ownership model, similar to the John Lewis Partnership model, enables its 70+ employees to share more in the future direction and success of the business.

Founded in 2014, the digital marketing and communications agency, founded by former TV News CEO Jay Flashman, creates original content and communication strategies for corporate clients and clients around the world. Formative clients include Microsoft, McKinsey, Tata Consultancy Services, and the World Economic Forum.

Formative CEO Guy and Managing Director Paul Muggeridge have transferred all shares to the Trust as part of the company’s goal to remain independent. Jay and Paul remain committed to the company and will remain in their roles.

Through the trust, employees with six or more months of continuous service will indirectly own a 100% stake in the business. The structure will see the current management team join an elected Staff Council that represents employees across the company.

Founder and CEO Jay Flashman says: “We are really proud of what we have achieved over the past seven years, as the business has grown from virtually nothing to a team of approximately 80 people.

“We have always aimed to be a people-centric business and our success is due to all members of our team. Employee ownership is thus a natural progression for us, ensuring that the future of the company remains in the hands of people who share our values and vision for the future.”

Deb Oxley Obe, CEO of the Employee Ownership Association (EOA), said: “Congratulations to the formative content on its transition to employee ownership ensuring the ethos, values and culture of the business, as well as rooting jobs in the region, for the long-term.

“Companies that give employees a stake and say to build trust and shared responsibility, thus uniting leaders and employees behind a common goal. This leaves the business in a better position to flex and adapt as the economy looks to recover and renew.”

Formative joins a rapidly growing network of EOTs in the UK that includes Aardman Animations, Richer Sounds and Go Ape.
