Ashley Thompson, Co-Founder and CEO of MUSH
We all need a little help along the way. Who were some of your mentors? Can you share a story about how to make an impact?
I have several unofficial mentors, and they each bring a superpower to the table. First and foremost, my father has been my longtime teacher. As a result, he is highly educated and incredibly wise. When I wrestle with the human condition, I call him. I remember the first time we had a difficult problem with someone on the team. He took a lot of time to listen, spent his energy digesting everything, and shared unique ways to solve dynamic problems. He also supported me emotionally. Admittedly, I was a bit dazed, and it calmed my fears. It always makes me feel better, no matter the situation.
Two of the other mentors are my executive coach Laura and one of Sam’s investors. Both people are incredibly intelligent, good thinkers and deep. Laura has the ability to connect with me on so many levels and make me laugh even on the toughest days. A lot of what I’m experiencing as a first-time founder/CEO is exactly this, first time. There is a steep learning curve, and Laura is always there to help with the process. She saw it in everything.
Tactically speaking, Sam has incredible operational experience. This is actually much rarer than one might think in the investing world. As an investor, he always puts his money where it is, it is like a whirlpool of success. He wholeheartedly advocates for the things he believes in and helps them achieve them with a winning mentality.
All of my mentors have at least two things in common – they are trustworthy and they read a lot. […]

Can you tell us a little bit about your “background”? What led you to this specific career path?
I am originally from Brazil. She graduated in journalism in 2011 and came to New York City right after that. I fell in love with journalism and after years of working in the restaurant business and trying to figure my way out, I decided to watch web development classes. And it never stopped! Now I’m a full stack web developer.
Can you tell our readers what kind of work you do is causing the disruption?
Legacy security check apps let you add people from your contacts so you will have 24/7 access to their GPS locations.
With Safe Circle, you can create circles and journeys. Only people in the selected circle will have access to your information and only during the trip.
For example, are you going on an online date? Choose a circle with your best friend. Going on a business trip? Define the department with your manager.
Most importantly, the alert system: When creating a flight, you’ll choose up to three check-in times to determine that you’re safe. At the appointed time, you will receive a notification reminding you to mark it as “secure”. If you don’t, friends in your chosen circle will receive an alert informing them that they need to check you out!
Other useful features are:
‘All is well’ and ‘At Danger’ pins: You can create an additional layer for your alert system. Double Pin System! You can create two different pins that will be used to finish your journey.
The first pin is the “All is good” pin. If you end your journey with this pin, it means you are safe and your circuit will be informed that you are safe!
The second pin is the “in peril” pin. If you end your trip with this pin, the trip will end naturally on your phone. However, your department will be notified that you may be at risk and will still have access to your flight information.
Get Me Out: Well, if you’re not in danger but want to get out of the situation, just hit the Get Me Out button and your friend will be alerted to call you to give you an excuse to leave.
Emergency: You can have up to two emergency contacts, then even if you don’t have a trip setup, when you click the emergency button, a trip will be created automatically and your contacts will be able to access your GPS location. Plus they will receive an alert on their phone!
No data storage: Once you have safely completed your trip, all data is deleted! Nothing in any cloud or database!
