2021 Digital Marketing Influencers - Inbound Marketing Agency
Written by publishing team

We are approaching our second anniversary Top 100 digital marketing influencers report, according to Buzzsumo, so let’s go back to Buzzsumo and take a look at what’s happened over the past 12 months.

Influencer marketing has been going from strength to strength in recent years as brands now see it as an essential component of their marketing strategy. While the past 12 months have been uncertain due to the pandemic, the popularity of influencer marketing has continued to grow. according to Influencer Marketing Performance Measurement Report 2021 From the Influencer Marketing Hub, 75% of respondents plan to budget for influencer marketing in 2021.

Therefore, it is important for these brands to ensure that they work with the perfect influencer for their audience and campaign. There are countless tools on the internet that help identify key influencers, and I am using for this report Buzzsumo Influencer Reports.

What are Buzzsumo Influencer Reports?

If you’ve read the last two installments of the Top 100 Digital Marketing Influencer Reports, you’ll be well aware of Buzzsumo’s Influencer Report. But, here’s a quick overview, or you can learn more about why Buzzsumo is the perfect tool for content marketers here.

BuzzSumo’s influencer tool identifies key influencers based on various search options such as a specific topic, niches, or search for specific users. These individuals or companies are then ranked based on their “impact” on the given search term. Determining impact is often difficult, however, Buzzsumo states that someone’s impact is measured by how much they influence the reach of a publication or article.

The influencer’s report can then be changed to sort results depending on various factors including the content they create and share, the average number of retweets they receive, and the relevance of their content.

For the following list, I’ve removed any companies that were included, to help highlight specific influencers. As a result, some big brands like Moz, Econsultancy and Google Analytics have been removed to highlight individuals rather than companies. Other than that the list was not tampered with, it was pulled straight from Buzzsumo, which means neither me nor Browser Media had any influence on selecting individual sites.

Stats of influencers in digital marketing for the year 2021

  • Again, this list shows that having a lot of followers does not necessarily mean that an individual has the most influence. The average follower count is around 88,000, and while this is still a relatively large number of followers, the range varies from just over 3,000 to over 3 million.
  • The average number of followers has decreased slightly from 2020 when it was approximately 94,000, however, the number of accounts followed by these users has also decreased over the past 12 months (39,000 vs. 17,000). This refers to the fact that these individuals are more selective about who they pursue, and could indicate an increase in working with them Smaller Influencers who may have more interactive followers.
  • On average, these individuals get 18 retweets per post which highlights the fact that their audience is constantly interacting with their posts. In addition, 40% of all tweets shared by these influencers are replies, which indicates the fact that they interact with their audience, which in turn enhances their influence.
  • Following the above point, on average, 17% of all tweets shared are retweeted from these 100 influencers. Again, this shows that they are interacting with their audience and sharing content posted by other users, which is another example of how they can affect a post’s reach.
